Momentarily

“And you and I will fly and see the world from up above the skies
Let me just hold your hands so I can just take you to my magic place”

JIMI . SONGWRITER

Momentarily

Momentarily, we’ll open possibilities
Momentarily, we’ll have a glimpse of what can be
And things that we feel and thought that’s just not right
May suddenly change and things will alright…

…if we close our eyes. Feel this song and let your mind be Free
We may just end up with some memories…momentarily

And you and I will fly and see the world from up above the skies
Let me just hold your hands so I can just take you to my magic place
Where you might feel love just like a warm embrace…momentarily

Momentarily, I’ll find my way into your heart
and I’ll find a way to let you in my life
Maybe from now, we’ll kiss each one goodnight
For the rest of our lives
Maybe then we’ll see in the end, there’s just you and me
Not just momentarily but for eternity

Momentarily, we’ll open possibilities
Momentarily, we’ll have a glimpse of what can be

And things that we feel and thought that’s just not right
Will suddenly change and they will feel alright
Things will be alright…Things will be alright
Love will be alright…Love will be alright…We will be alright

My Magic Place

Momentarily came while I was thinking of a particular incident in an impoverished town in Asia while I was visiting the place with my friend who lived all his life in the USA – originally from Illinois until the decision to move to California. We were there for a meeting with the chieftains of the local tribe to discuss issues that will affect an agro-industrial model that we were putting together as part of our studies in biofuels and carbon sequestration. While waiting in the car, I asked my friend: “What do you notice with the people around here?”

Amidst all the poverty, heat, dust, humidity, lack of internet service – things that would send folks whom I know in California into serious depression, the people around us were all smiling and laughing and enjoying each other’s company – vendors, pedestrians, cab drivers and others. I can’t help remember all those folks I interact with in Silicon Valley. I guess too much money and frowning go together.

The song in an experiment into a genre that is not jazz and not RNB…and not quite “popsy”…I wrote the song as a “love song” but with the magic of a simple smile central to the whole message. Somebody once asked what is my metrics in measuring success. I remember saying “smiles” without even thinking.

A magic place for me can be anywhere…an unguarded moment when we smile – unconsciously celebrating for a fleeting moment and feeling alive. I’ve experience simple magical moments in this song. I wrote the song in my room and kept it to myself for a long time. We recorded the tracks because my band wanted to jamm on something new.

The vocals were recorded after a couple of days – in one take by and independent artist auditioning for the first time. It was Geneva’s (Bebz is her nickname) first time inside a recording studio singing a song she heard for the first time working with musicians she just met. We captured magic on right there and then – a moment I vividly remember. I also, remember a memorable conversation with Bebz. She said: “Dude, I feel like I can die happy anytime. I never expected myself to accomplished much in life and through this song, I feel like I already contributed something to the world.”…I was taken aback by the simple innocence and honesty of the moment that I decided to write more songs for her to sing.

The first thing I noticed when I played “Momentarily” to friends after we recorded the song is that they smiled…particularly that laugh at the end of the song that we didn’t edit out of the recording because it’s a happy moment…an unguarded happy moment in Bebz’s life.
