A child with sunken eyes just haunts me
Shades of a broken life tearing through my heart and soul and
Hide, seek and laugh aloud they should do
Cries and not lullabies, be it sunshine, be it rain
If we close our eyes and fail to see what’s real
Then our hearts will cease to love and care and feel
If we close our eyes then someday we’ll begin
To wake up in a sad world where laughter disappeared
Look all around see about you
Wealth and prosperity amidst where children’s dreams get lost
If we close our eyes, if we close our eyes
If we close our eyes, laughters disappear
Look with your heart and see around you
Our souls, our humanity…tied up with our children’s laughters
This song came to me when I was thinking about the children – orphans, those living in the streets, those abused in one form or another…Having lived through poverty as a young kid, I can’t help but thing that one of those children in the streets could’ve been me. They could’ve been any of us because of a variety of reasons – an accident of birth, a parent’s unlucky break…perhaps, just because…At a time when we have created the greatest wealth creation engine in our history that made some individuals wealthier than entire nations, we still see children living in the streets.
We are failing the generation that will inherit everything that we are living for right now. We are destroying the planet that they will live in after we are gone because of greed. We are caging children just for cruelty. We are allowing them to die because we value guns more than their lives. The monsters that they should fear are us not some imaginary boogeyman. We are failing them.
